MEMBERS PRESENT:
Michael Scott
J.Dale Prince
Robb Mackes
Chris Schafer
Judith Robinson
Sally Harvey
Meeting was called to order by Michael Scott.
Minutes from previous meeting were approved.
REPORTS:
Program Chair, Chris Schafer - RI was well represented at this conference, sponsoring or co-sponsoring 4 programs at MLA this year. They appear to be well attended. Topics ranged from patient literacy to a diversity innovation session.
Treasurer's report was handed out. No comments were made.
NEXT YEAR'S PROGRAM DISCUSSION:
New MLA 2005 dates are May 14-19th. Programs will run on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 2:30-4:00. Broad topics include education outreach, research, technology and diversity.
Some suggestions for next year's programs were:
Environmental Health - a speaker from Louisiana was suggested by Jerry Perry. The topic would fit into Diversity or Education Outreach. This speaker is potentially expensive so we would need co-sponsors.
Another suggestion was the "rebuttal" of the Bailey book by Roughgarten. Michael Newman and the LGBT SIG wild decide on this, will need sponsorship. Again, could be expensive and we would need co-sponsors.
WEBSITE AND/OR DISCUSSION LIST UPDATE:
Chris Shaffer is spearheading the conversion of our website and the creation of a listserv. He believes within one month we could have both, but they are still hammering out policies. This could help give us visibility and boost membership.
BOARD ELECTIONS:
2004-2005 Chair Elect - Judith Robinson, Eastern Virginia Medical School
2004-2005 Chair - Chris Shaffer
2004-2006 Treasurer - J. Dale Prince
We still need to elect a Section Council Representative. This will be done over email after the meeting. Chris Shaffer will see if we need someone to attend a meeting at this conference.
BYLAWS ISSUES:
Elections will be held by March 1st from now on.
MISCELLANEOUS:
We need to keep financial records for 7 years. The question arose, do we want an archive for the Section? Chris Shaffer offered to look at the materials we have that are not financial in nature and make a determination.
Judith suggested we give out "Irrelevant" awards and/or ribbons that say funny things.
