Minutes of the Relevant Issues Section Meeting

MLA '05, Tuesday, 17 May 2005, San Antonio, TX

MEMBERS PRESENT:

Jon Crossno
Ellen Detlefsen
Sally Harvey
Robb Mackes
J. Dale Prince
Judith Robinson
Chris Shaffer

Meeting was called to order by Chris Shaffer.

Minutes from previous meeting were approved.

REPORTS:

Treasurer Report: The Section has opened an account, through MLA, with Washington Mutual Bank (WAMU). Benefits of such an account include smooth transition between treasurers since no new account will need to be established, and, should a treasurer go missing in action, Ray Naegle (naegele@mlahq.org) at MLA is a signatory for the account; however, this does not mean that Naegle's signature is necessary. He is there only for emergencies. Account Balance As of 5/6/2005: $997.23

Membership: Chris Shafer reported that membership is low and something must be done to increase membership. Retention may be increased by sending out welcome letters. The Secretary/Treasurer will look into this, with the hope of finding the Section's logo and creating letterhead.

Program Chair, Judith Robinson: Overcoming Challenges sessions. The Section provided support for reviewing, speaker support, AV, and general grunt work. No monetary payments were made this year. The initial planning session for the program was not effective, and there was considerable difficulty in planning. However, feedback from this year's program was good.

Chair's report: The Section promoted the NIH public access award by sending email to members and officially signed on to MLA's list for support.

Section Council report: Rob Mackes reported on a new MLA recruitment award, reminded the Section about the Open Forums that would be taking place at MLA '05, that the New Members SIG would be meeting for the first time. Additionally, the Scholarly Publishing taskforce wants feedback on what would be useful to us. Rob suggested a website. If any suggestions, send them to Pat Thibodeau, thibo001@mc.duke.edu.

GLBT SIG report: Celebrated their 10th anniversary this year with a party.

WEBSITE AND/OR DISCUSSION LIST UPDATE:
MLA now has free email and web hosting for sections and SIGS. Chris signed the Section up and established an RI website: http://ri.mlanet.org. He further suggested that the Section needs a webmaster. There are two email lists, one for the Section and one for the board. Chris is willing to remain as webmaster, but has no time to make the site pretty.

BOARD ELECTIONS:

2005-2006 Chair Elect, Program Chair: Ellen Detlefsen
2005-2006 Chair: Judith Robinson
2004-2006 Treasurer: J. Dale Prince
2004-2006 Section Council Representative: Rob Mackes
2005-2006 Section Council Representative Elect: Cate Canevari
Nancy Henry is a potential candidate to the MLA nominating committee 2006.

2006 PROGRAM DISCUSSION:

The theme of the program is "Transformations A-Z." Open Forums were mentioned as a possibility.
